Helena Awwad
As a Palestinian student activist who grew up in San Francisco, my priorities come from firsthand experience.
I have worked with grassroots movements, non-profit organizations, student clubs, and campaigns. I’m currently on the boards of two RSOs (SJP and Dabket Watan) and a member of other clubs and student organizations (Best Buddies and the Arab Culture Ensemble). I know what it’s like to want to see change happen that actually impacts your daily life and your wants.
I’ve heard it from you in person and on social media: you want to see things change. Navigating college is difficult, especially when the costs keep rising, and things don’t seem to improve.
I want to uplift your voice. As a senator, I would facilitate better connections between students and student government. It is important to me that RSO’s and individual students feel their concerns are addressed.
I care about your safety and wellness. I want to improve the lighting on and off campus, like including laundry in your housing cost, because paying for laundry on top of your payments is ridiculous. Additionally, increasing accessibility for students with disabilities, for example, eliminating Safe Ride’s long waits. I would work to make UCD a sanctuary school, preventing ICE from entering campus for any reason. To implement these ideas, I hope to build connections with the Gender and Sexuality Commission, the Undocumented Student Center, the External Affairs Commission, and more. These are just some of the ideas I have, but I’ll make sure your wants are heard.
I care about where your money is going. Aside from improving your daily life, like lighting and laundry, it’s time Davis implemented BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) into our school. BDS would remove open and hidden investments in Israel, something our college tuition and costs should not be funding. Working with the Special Committee on Ethical Spending and the Ethnic and Cultural Affairs Commission would be a major part of my term to get this done.
I am the senator for the people; sometimes I’m mistaken for Zohran Mamdani. Let’s make your voice heard. Awwad 4 Senate!
