I am Ayman Imam, a first-year Political Science major seeking election to the ASUCD Senate as a part of the Sawt Slate. In my role as treasurer for various RSOs across campus, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges student groups face and what ASUCD can do to make a difference. There are three areas in which my candidacy aims to focus: expanding basic needs resources, improving transportation, and facilitating stronger connections between students and campus organizations.

Expand Resources:

Many students find themselves struggling with basic needs such as housing security, food insecurity, and financial concerns even as they continue their academic pursuits. ASUCD already has the capacity to alleviate some of these burdens, but it must do more to ensure its programs are well known and accessible. I will seek to ensure that there is increased visibility for programs such as the Aggie Compass Basic Needs Center and to improve the ways in which students can receive assistance from these resources.

Enhance Transportation Services:

Transit is no laughing matter in Davis, especially among students living off-campus. Students need consistent and safe options in order to get to where they're going, such as campus events or classes. As a leader in ASUCD, I will seek to promote partnerships with Unitrans to improve route frequency and reliability, and improve lighting on popular bike routes, and enhance the communication of transportation opportunities on campus. Consistent and effective transit is critical for allowing students to reach their destination, and therefore needs to be considered carefully.

Foster Interactions:

There are hundreds of Recognized Student Organizations at UC Davis, but students have trouble getting involved. First-year students especially face difficulties in finding an organization that suits their interest, or being made to feel welcome upon joining one. As a treasurer of two Recognized Student Organizations myself, I have come to appreciate how important it is for organizations to connect with students to sustain themselves, as well as how important it is for students to connect with an organization. I plan to foster this connection through improved ASUCD outreach, interaction fairs, and communication between organizations and students. Reasons

Why I Am Running:

It is essential that ASUCD takes into consideration what the students say and act accordingly. In my capacity as senator, I will attend all meetings, speak out strongly for these issues, and ensure that the voices of underrepresented students are heard by this assembly. I am not seeking the position for its title alone; rather, I seek to fulfill the duties of the role.
